Public Speaking

Learn to speak in public confidently

Vancore Toastmasters offers public speaking / communication training through in a comfortable and supportive environment.

What makes a good public speaker?

Think back to the last time you were inspired by a presenter. Did they make you laugh, cry or tell you something that you found extremely interesting? The key presenting well is by really connecting with your audience. Toastmaster’s can help you learn techniques that help improve your ability to convey your message and create a lasting impact on your audience. Eye contact, body language, voice modulation, speech structure and grammar all play a part in becoming a proficient public speaker. Learn these, any many other skills at a VanCore meeting.

You can get over the fear!

Most people fear the unknown but you will quickly find out that speaking in front of people involves no magic and no gimmicks. Just practicing and learning from the feedback from your fellow members can help you make incredible strides to overcome your fear of public speaking.

Communication Track

The core of the communication track is the Communication and Leadership Program manual which contains 10 speech projects. Every new member is sent a basic manual along with three other manuals: Your Speaking Voice, Effective Speech Evaluation, and Gestures: Your Body Speaks.

The Competent Toastmaster (CTM) Award

The basic manual helps develop your speaking skills one step at a time. Every project builds upon what you have learned in the preceding project. As you complete the projects you'll learn the importance of sincerity in speaking, how to effectively organize a presentation, how to use body language and voice to convey your message, word choice and props, persuasive speaking, and how to inspire others.

Your first goal as a member is to complete all 10 projects in this manual. When you do, you are eligible for Competent Toastmaster (CTM) recognition.

Taking it to the Next Level

After receiving CTM recognition you can enter the Advanced Communication and Leadership Program, where you can refine and enhance your basic skills. This program consists of 15 manuals, each containing five speech projects. Many of the manuals are career-oriented; several are not. You choose the manuals you want to complete and the skills you want to learn.
